Inn at Glencairn: Happy Twentieth Birthday!

Flashback to 2005:  We were knee deep in a renovation that seemed like it would never end. My husband - who has a construction consulting business in New York City - recommended our general contractor. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and it probably was in retrospect, but I would be lying if I said it was smooth sailing. In fact, after flying our "Opening Soon" flag for about two years, I was pretty fed up with the lack of progress. Our general contractor largely went MIA toward the end of the job, leaving us to manage the project with a rag tag bunch of carpenters - one of whom was getting his license in chiropractic medicine. I say a special prayer for anyone who wanders into his office looking for an adjustment!

It was early Spring and we had our first reservations coming in May 2005- Princeton Reunion and Graduation. These guests drove up our driveway and literally begged us to take their reservation because there was nothing else available for those busy dates. Bravely (stupidly?) we did. Time was ticking and just days prior to our deadline, we had yet another painter walk off the job. We must have gone through at least five painters during that last month. It was a revolving door of broken promises and unmet obligations. Without a reliable contractor and laborers, literally everyone who remained on the job told me that we were not going meet that deadline. Maybe that was the spark that we needed!

It was only through sheer determination (and a little stubbornness) that we managed to finish everything just hours before our first guest walked through the door. The project took on a life of its own and the people who were with us in those final 24 hours were instrumental in getting us open in time. Our HVAC vendor was scrubbing carpets, our Innkeeper was doing paint touch up, and our Housekeeper was pulling an all-nighter doing just about anything that needed to be done. There was a palpable energy that night and the cast of characters were so dedicated to a positive outcome. We will always remain grateful to their dedication to the project in those final moments. Suffice it to say, we opened on time!

Over 20 years, we have had our fair share of Innkeepers, Housekeepers, and Innsitters - and stories. Most were amazing and brought personality as well as professionalism to their jobs. Sure, there were a few that probably should have chosen other professions, but all that said we are truly fortunate to have so many kind, caring, and hospitable people walk through our doors.

You can also imagine how many guests we have had over 20 years! So many fantastic people coming for a night or much longer. Many coming back year after year. We have had the same couple come for Princeton Reunions nearly since we opened! The original reason for opening the Inn was to share this important, historical structure with the public. So many historic structures in the US are torn down, and we felt it was important to preserve our piece of history. Many of our guests are here because they appreciate and want that unique experience that you cannot really get in a Marriott or Hilton! It is those guests that keep us doing what we are doing.

The past twenty years have flown by, and we cannot wait to see what the future brings! Thank you to all of our staff and guests who have made this adventure a reality. You have all left your mark on the Inn in some way, and we are grateful.
